Explore the unpredictable world of Naked Raku, a specialised firing technique known for its dramatic black-and-white surfaces. Naked Raku uses a resist slip and glaze system that peels away after firing, allowing smoke to directly mark the clay surface. The result is a unique pattern of fine crackles, lines, and smoky textures, each piece completely one of a kind.
The process begins with smooth, porous clay bodies, often treated with Terra Sigillata and carefully polished to achieve a refined surface.
During firing, pieces are heated to approximately 800–900°C, then removed from the kiln and placed into sealed containers with combustible materials such as sawdust. The smoke penetrates the clay, creating bold contrasts between the white surface and deep black markings. Once cooled, the outer glaze layer is removed, revealing the final “naked” surface beneath.
